So you want to know the technical information about the Survival Gaming servers, eh?
The SG hardware is locally hosted and managed by Black Reaper on a server rack in his home in the western suburbs of Chicago. This allows him to know exactly how much of the servers resources are being utilized. The hardware is all enterprise class components which are designed for stable and reliable usage. The rack server itself runs the Linux based Proxmox Virtualization Environment as the base operating system, which has a virtual machine (VM) which runs Ubuntu Server for the game servers and the website.
Why run the game servers on a VM? This allows for frequent backups of the VM itself, faster restoration if needed, easy transfer to different server hardware if needed, allows multiple VMs to be created to run different services, and should something "break" in one VM the other VMs are not affected. Best of all, due to the way Linux virtualization works there is very little impact on performance.
Currently, the SG server is hosted on the below Dell PowerEdge R820.
